2017 may be crisis year for DDoS attacks, warns Deloitte

The proliferation of IoT devices and IoT exploit kits may make 2017 a turning point in DDoS attacks requiring new defence tactics, warns Deloitte Organisations have generally been able to keep pace with the increasing size, frequency and impact of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, but that may change in 2017, Deloitte has warned. DDoS is not a new topic, but the potential scale of the problem in 2017 is, according to the latest Technology, media and telecommunications predictions report from Deloitte. The size of DDoS attacks increased by an average of 30% a year from 2013 to 2015, but 2016 saw the first two attacks of one terabit per second (Tbps) or more, and Deloitte predicts that trend will continue in 2017. According to the report, 2017 will see an average of one attack a month reaching at least 1Tbps in size, with the number of DDoS attacks for the year expected to reach 10 million. Deloitte predicts an average attack size of 1.25Gbps to 1.5Gbps, and the report points out that an unmitigated attack in this size range would be sufficient to take many organisations offline. The anticipated escalation is due to three concurrent trends, the report said. First, the growing installed base of insecure internet of things (IoT) devices that are usually easier to incorporate into botnets than PCs, smartphones and tablets. Second, the online availability of malware methodologies such as Mirai, which allow relatively unskilled attackers to corral insecure IoT devices and use them to launch attacks. Third, the availability of ever-higher bandwidth speeds, which means that each compromised device can send a lot more junk data. The report warns that the consequence of the growth of IoT devices alone could mean that content distribution networks (CDNs) and local mitigations may not be able to scale readily to mitigate the impact of concurrent large-scale attacks, requiring a new approach to tackling DDoS attacks. Phill Everson, head of cyber risk services, Deloitte UK, said a DDoS attack aims to make a website or connected device inaccessible. “DDoS attacks are the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of fake customers converging on a traditional shop at the same time. The shop struggles to identify genuine customers and quickly becomes overwhelmed. The consequence could see an online commerce site temporarily unable to transact, or a government site not able to process tax returns,” he said. Everson said the expected volume and scale of DDoS attacks in 2017 would challenge the defences of most organisations, regardless of size. “Businesses of all sizes should acknowledge the growing DDoS threat and consider how best to handle attacks of these magnitudes,” he said. Any organisation that is increasing its dependence on the internet should be aware of a potential spike in the impact of such attacks, according to the report. The entities that should remain alert include, but are not limited to, retailers with a high share of online revenues, online video game companies, video streaming services, online business and service delivery companies such as financial services firms, and government online services, the report said. “Some organisations may have become a little blasé about DDoS attacks, however these attacks are likely to increase in intensity in 2017 and beyond, and the attackers are likely to become more inventive. Unfortunately, it may never be possible to relax about DDoS attacks,” authors of the report said. Deloitte recommends that companies and governments should consider a range of options to mitigate the impact of DDoS attacks, such as decentralising critical functions like cloud computing, leasing a larger bandwidth capacity than they need, proactively identifying weaknesses and vulnerabilities related to DDoS attacks, developing agile defence techniques, and introducing granular traffic filtering capabilities. DDoS Attacks: A Threat to Businesses and Consumers

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are a growing concern for businesses and consumers alike. These attacks are on the rise along with all forms of cyber-attack. According to Kapersky, “43% of businesses experienced data loss in the past year due to a cyber-security incident.” While DDoS attacks threaten the reputation and the bottom line for businesses, they also threaten consumers. In many cases a DDoS attack is launched as a decoy to hide the real intentions of the hacker – to steal corporate intellectual property and financial data, as well as consumer data. DDoS attacks have been a factor in some of the largest data breaches. Dave Larson of Infosecurity Magazine reports that “in a large proportion of data breaches reported over the last few years, DDoS attacks have been occurring simultaneously, as a component of a wider strategy; meaning hackers are utilizing this technique in a significant way.” At its core a DDoS attack uses hundreds and sometimes thousands of computers to flood the business website with large volume of internet traffic to overwhelm the host server. When this happens the website often stops functioning for a period of time. Sometimes hackers will continue to randomly attack a website until the business pays a ransom – much like ransomware that targets individuals. There are three major types of DDoS attacks available to a hacker. Volumetric: Most common. Sends a large amount of internet traffic to the host server simultaneously. Amplification: Sends a high volume of traffic using large packets of data. Requires fewer “zombie” or compromised computers to accomplish the same task as a volumetric DDoS attack. Resource Depletion: Makes multiple requests through multiple ports or entry points into the targeted server until its capacity is exceeded. There are a number of hardware and software tools to help defend against such attacks, but the primary methods of defense are knowledge, detection, and training. Businesses should analyze how their networks and the systems attached to that network interact with the internet to uncover and fix vulnerabilities before they are exploited by hackers. Train IT employees to recognize the hallmarks of a DDoS and other cyber-attacks, so they can react quickly. Train all employees to recognize and immediately report any unusual activity on any system connected to the internet. Train all employees to question unusual emails or texts requesting W-2’s, other personnel data, or corporate financial information. Develop specific rules for employees regarding usage of social media and the types of corporate information that can be shared online. A decade ago the idea of loss prevention (LP) had been limited to the idea of theft of merchandise. With the advent of online retailing, retailers have discovered that loss must be viewed more broadly to “intended sales income that was not and cannot be realized” [Beck and Peacock, 28]. While Beck and Peacock regard malicious loses such as vandalism as part of sales that cannot be realized, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks certainly could fit with that definition. Unlike other kinds of LP, where the attempt of the thief is to conceal their activities, a DDoS attack is designed for maximal visibility so the purpose of the attack is to deny the target customer’s access, and especially susceptible are businesses that have online payment gateways [Gordon, 20] which today includes many business and non-profit entities. Particularly problematic for CIOs is that the nature of DDoS attacks is constantly changing. Many of these attacks occur at networking layers below the application level, which means for the CIO that buying an off-the-shelf software product is unlikely to provide an effective countermeasure [Oliveira et al, 19]. Of course, the determination of financial impact is an important consideration when weighing allocations of the IT security budget. While it is clear that the “loss of use and functionality” constitutes true losses to a company [Hovav and D’Arcy, 98], estimating a potential loss encounters difficulties given the lack of historical data and a perceived risk to putting an exact figure upon security breach losses. This presents a problem for the CIO because of the need to show ROI on security investments [Hovav and D’Arcy, 99]. Yet, a successful DDoS attack has the potential to cost a company millions of dollars in real financial losses from the direct costs of work time, equipment leases, and legal costs to the indirect costs, such as, loss of competitive advantage and damage done to the company’s brand. The direct cost of “a more complex breach that affects a cross-section of a complex organization” can often exceed £500,000 (624,000 USD) and does not include additional five or six figure fines if government regulatory agencies are involved [Walker and Krausz, 30]. If the CIO cannot buy an off-the-shelf software product to prepare against a DDoS attack, how does the CIO develop an I.T. security strategy that is appropriate to this specific threat? While this is by no means an exhaustive list: here are a few approaches that one can take that may help to developing an effective I.T. strategy that can deal with the DDoS threat. (1) Accept that developing an I.T. strategy effective against mitigating loss caused by DDoS requires resources, but your business is worth protecting. (2) Remember that the purpose of technology is to connect your business to people [Sharif, 348], and that connectivity is itself an asset that has real value. (3) Developing effective business partners can help you ensure business continuity. These partnerships could be with consultants, alliance partnerships that have successfully dealt with DDoS attacks, or businesses that specialize in dealing with this kind of security issue. DDOS attacks intensify in EMEA

Distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region witnessed an uptick in the last quarter and are set to intensify in 2017. This is according to a report issued by F5 Networks, which revealed data from its Security Operations Centre (SOC), highlighting the growing scale and intensity of cyber attacks in the region. DDOS attacks have been around since at least 2000. These attacks refer to a situation in which many compromised machines flood a target with requests for information. The target can’t handle the onslaught of requests, so it crashes. Consultancy firm Deloitte also expects cyber attacks to enter the terabit era in 2017, with DDOS attacks becoming larger in scale, harder to mitigate and more frequent. F5 Networks points out that in 2016 to date, it has handled and mitigated 8 536 DDOS instances. The company notes that one of the attacks featured among the largest globally – a 448Gbps user datagram protocol (UDM) and Internet control message protocol (ICMP) fragmentation flood using over 100 000 IP addresses emanating from multiple regions. It explains the incident highlights a growing trend for global co-ordination to achieve maximum impact, with IP attack traffic stemming largely from Vietnam (28%), Russia (22%), China (21%), Brazil (15%) and the US (14%). “The EMEA Security Operations Centre has been experiencing rapid growth since launching in September last year, and it is entirely driven by the explosion of attacks across the region, as well as businesses realising they need to prepare for the worst,” says Martin Walshaw, senior engineer at F5 Networks. In Q1 (October – December), the SOC experienced a 100% increase in DDOS customers, compared to the same period last year. F5 Networks says UDP fragmentations were the most commonly observed type of DDOS attack in Q1 (23% of total), followed by domain name system reflections, UDP floods (both 15%), syn floods (13%) and NTP reflections (8%). “Given the rise and variety of new DDOS techniques, it is often unclear if a business is being targeted,” Walshaw says. “This is why it is more important than ever to ensure traffic is being constantly monitored for irregularities and that organisations have the measures in place to react rapidly. “The best way forward is to deploy a multi-layered DDOS strategy that can defend applications, data and networks. Three ways retailers can safeguard against cybercrime

Chinese New Year is always a shopping boom time in town. People are generous in spending on food, decorations, and fashion during the important cultural festival. While retailers are focused on ensuring that they successfully take advantage of spikes in online and in-store sales, are they as prepared as they need to be to defend against major distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks? Avoiding a cyber-crime catastrophe Thanksgiving officially kicks off the biggest shopping period of the year globally. The period through to Chinese New Year may be a sales bonanza, but it’s also a period of high vulnerability that criminals exploit to maximize the threat to a retailer’s business. Along with gaming and finance companies, retailers are popular targets because they store sensitive data that thieves can use for financial gain. Additionally, DDOS attacks are often used to distract organizations so that even more costly web application attacks can take place at the same time. But the truth is no industry is immune and the threat is increasing in its relentlessness. With Chinese New Year sales accounting for a sizeable chunk of most retailers’ revenues, from a criminal’s perspective, there could hardly be a better time to launch a cyber attack. What’s more, with systems already creaking under a load of peak volumes, it might not take much of a straw to break the camel’s back. The last thing a retailer wants is for their business to spectacularly and very visibly come to a sudden halt because they can’t defend against and mitigate a major distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. Retailers face a growing threat Talk of cyber attacks are more than mere scaremongering – the threat is very real. For example, in September, the release of the Mirai code — a piece of malware that infects IoT devices enabling them to be used for DDoS attacks — opened a Pandora’s box of opportunities for ruthless cyber entrepreneurs who want to disrupt their target markets and exploit the vulnerabilities and weaknesses of companies who honestly serve their customers. This code gives criminals the ability to orchestrate legions of unsecured Internet of Things (IoT) devices to act as unwitting participants in targeted DDoS attacks. These objects could be anything from domestic hubs and routers to printers and digital video recorders — as long as they’re connected to the internet. The latest large DDoS attacks have used botnets just like this — proving that the bad guys are multiplying and, most likely, gearing up for bigger things. Asia is not immune and Hong Kong is a prime target According to a recent report by Nexusguard, DDoS attacks increased 43 percent in Q2 to 34,000 attacks in the Asia-Pacific region and 83 percent worldwide. The largest increase was seen in Hong Kong, where attacks rose an astonishing 57 percent. China, which saw a 50% increase in attacks, is the number one target in the region. According to the report, over the course of a month, a Chinese website was attacked 41 times. The fact is, that every company needs to pay this issue serious attention and put effective plans in place. Prevention is the better than the cure There are no easy answers to the question of how to secure IoT smart devices — especially at the ‘budget conscious’ end of the market. That’s why we expect that these DDoS attacks will continue to proliferate, meaning that targeted DDoS attacks of increasing scale and frequency will almost certainly occur as a result. So how can retailers defend themselves against the threat of an attack? Organizations have to use a combination of measures to safeguard against even the most determined DDoS attack. This include: 1. Limiting the impact of an attack by absorbing DDoS traffic targeted at the application layer, deflecting all DDoS traffic targeted at the network layer and authenticating valid traffic at the network edge 2. Choosing an ISP that connects directly to large carriers and other networks, as well as internet exchanges — allowing traffic to pass efficiently 3. Employing the services of a network-based DDoS provider — with a demonstrable track record of mitigating DDoS attacks and sinking significant data floods. This will safeguard specific IP address ranges that organizations want to protect. Chinese New Year is a critical period for retailers — and hopefully for all the right reasons. DDoS Attacks on the Rise—Here’s What Companies Need to Do

Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks have been going on for years. But in recent months they seem to have gained much more attention, in part because of high-profile incidents that affected millions of users. For instance, in late October 2016 a massive DDoS assault on Domain Name System (DNS) service provider Dyn temporarily shut down some of the biggest sites on the Internet. The incident affected users in much of the East Coast of the United States as well as data centers in Texas, Washington, and California. Dyn said in statements that tens of millions of IP addresses hit its infrastructure during the attack. Just how much attention DDoS is getting these days is indicated by a recent blog post by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University. The post, entitled, “Distributed Denial of Service Attacks: Four Best Practices for Prevention and Response,” became SEI’s most visited of the year after just two days, said a spokesman for the institute. To help defend against such attacks, organizations need to understand that this is not just an IT concern. “While DDoS attack prevention is partly a technical issue, it is also largely a business issue,” said Rachel Kartch, analysis team lead at the CERT Division of SEI, a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense and operated by CMU, and author of the DDoS post. Fortunately there are steps organizations can take to better protect themselves against DDoS attacks, and Kartch describes these in the post. In general, organizations should begin planning for attacks in advance, because it’s much more difficult to respond after an attack is already under way. “While DDoS attacks can’t be prevented, steps can be taken to make it harder for an attacker to render a network unresponsive,” Kartch noted. To fortify IT resources against a DDoS attack, it’s vital to make the architecture as resilient as possible. Fortifying network architecture is an important step not just in DDoS network defense, Kartch said, but in ensuring business continuity and protecting the organization from any kind of outage. To help disperse organizational assets and avoid presenting a single rich target to an attacker. organizations should locate servers in different data centers; ensure that data centers are located on different networks; ensure that data centers have diverse paths, and ensure that the data centers, or the networks that the data centers are connected to, have no notable bottlenecks or single points of failure. For those organizations that depend on servers and Internet presence, it’s important to make sure resources are geographically dispersed and not located in a single data center, Kartch said. “If resources are already geographically dispersed, it is important to view each data center as having more than one pipe to [the] Internet, and ensure that not all data centers are connected to the same Internet provider,” she said. While these are best practices for general business continuity and disaster recovery, they will also help ensure organizational resiliency in response to a DDoS attack. The post also describes other practices for defending against DDoS. One is to deploy appropriate hardware that can handle known attack types and use the options in the hardware that can protect network resources. While bolstering resources will not prevent a DDoS attack from happening, Kartch said, doing so will lessen the impact of an attack. Certain types of DDoS attacks have existed for a long time, and a lot of network and security hardware is capable of mitigating them. For example, many commercially available network firewalls, web application firewalls, and load balancers can defend against protocol attacks and application-layer attacks, Kartch said. Specialty DDoS mitigation appliances also can protect against these attacks. Another good practice is to scale up network bandwidth. “For volumetric attacks, the solution some organizations have adopted is simply to scale bandwidth up to be able to absorb a large volume of traffic if necessary,” Kartch said. “That said, volumetric attacks are something of an arms race, and many organizations won’t be able or willing to pay for the network bandwidth needed to handle some of the very large attacks we have recently seen. This is primarily an option for very large organizations and service providers.” It’s likely that DDoS attacks will continue to be a major issue for organizations. A 2016 study by content delivery network provider Akamai said these types of incidents are rising in number as well as in severity and duration. 2017 predictions: US isolationism, DDoS, data sharing

Without a doubt, 2016 was the year of the DDoS. The year came to a close with a major DDoS attack on DNS provider Dyn, which took down several major internet sites on the Eastern US seaboard. This attack was different – not so much in terms of its volume or its technique, but in the fact that instead of being directed at its intended target, it was targeted at network infrastructure used by the target. I think we are likely to see more DDoS attacks in 2017, both leveraging amplification attacks and direct traffic generated by the Internet of Things. However, we will also see a growing number of incidents in which not just the target experiences outages, but also the networks hosting the sources of the DDoS, as they also need to support significant outbound traffic volumes. This is likely to lead to increasing instability – until such a time as network operators start seeing DDoS as an issue they need to respond to. In this sense, the issue of DDoS is likely to increasingly self-correct over time. The other main trends and developments that I foresee for the year ahead are as follows: ? I think we are likely to see the first few cases where attribution of nation states accountable for attacks starts to backfire. Over the past few years, corporations and nation states have published a lot of theories on espionage campaigns. One issue with these incidents is the fact that often, contrary to human intelligence, the malware and tools that are used in these attacks leave the intent of the attack open to interpretation.  Was the goal to spy on the development of a country and its international relations?  Was it to steal information for economic gain?  Or was the attack intended to result in sabotage?  Those are the all-important questions that are not always easy to answer. The risk of one country inadvertently misunderstanding an attack, and taking negative action in response, is increasing. When a nation’s critical infrastructure suddenly fails, after the country has been publicly implicated in an attack, was it a counterattack or a simple failure? ? In the new policy environment being introduced by President-elect Donald Trump, there is some risk that the United States may start to withdraw from the international policy engagement that has become the norm in cyber security. This would be unfortunate. Cyber security is not purely a domestic issue for any country, and that includes the United States. Examples of great cyber security ideas hail from across the world. For instance, recent capture-the-flag competitions show that some of the best offensive cyber security talent hails from Taiwan, China and Korea. In addition, some tools such as Cyber Green, which tracks overall cyber health and makes international security measurable, originate in Japan rather than the United States. Withdrawing from international cooperation on cyber security will have a number of negative implications.  At a strategic level it is likely to lead to less trust between countries, and reduce our ability to maintain a good channel of communications when major breaches are uncovered and attributed.  At a tactical level it is likely to result in less effective technical solutions and less sharing around attacks. ? Meanwhile, across the pond, Presidential elections in France, a Federal election in Germany, and perhaps a new president taking power in Iran will all lead to more changes in the geopolitical arena. In the past, events of major importance such as these have typically brought an increase in targeted attack campaigns gathering intelligence (as widespread phishing) and exploiting these news stories to steal user credentials and distribute malware. ? Companies will become more selective about what data they decide to store on their users. Historically, the more data that was stored, the more opportunities there were for future monetisation. However, major data breaches such as we have seen at Yahoo! and OPM have highlighted that storing data can lead to costs that are quite unpredictable. Having significant data can result in your government requesting access through warrants and the equivalent of national security letters. It can also mean that you become the target of determined adversaries and nation states. We have started seeing smaller companies and services, such as Whisper Systems, move towards a model where little data is retained. Over time, my expectation is that larger online services will at least become a little bit more selective in the data they store, and their customers will increasingly expect it of them. ? We will see significant progress in the deployment of TLS in 2017. Let’s Encrypt, the free Certificate Authority, now enables anyone to enable TLS for their website at little cost. In addition, Google’s support for Certificate Transparency will make TLS significantly more secure and robust. With this increased use of encryption, though, will come additional scrutiny by governments, the academic cryptography community, and security researchers. We will see more TLS-related vulnerabilities appear throughout the year, but overall, they will get fixed and the internet will become a safer place as a result. ? I expect that 2017 will also be the year when the security community comes to terms with the fact that machine learning is now a crucial part of our toolkit. Machine learning approaches have already been a critical part of how we deal with spam and malicious software, but they have always been treated with some suspicion in the industry. This year it will become widely accepted that machine learning is a core component of most security tools and implementations. However, there is a risk here as well. As the scale of its use continues to grow, we will have less and less direct insight into the decisions our security algorithms and protocols make. As these new machine learning systems need to learn, rather than be reconfigured, we will see more false positives. This will motivate protocol implementers to “get things right” early and stay close to the specifications to avoid detection by overzealous anomaly detection tools. Pirate Bay and ExtraTorrent down DDoS Attack

The Pirate Bay and ExtraTorrent, two of the biggest remaining torrent sites on the internet, appear to be unavailable for users right now. According to  TorrentFreak , a massive DDoS attack is responsible for ExtraTorrent’s problems, while The Pirate Bay is still trying to work out what’s going on. ExtraTorrent reportedly received a threat several days ago, demanding that the site take down new protections it had built in for users, but which make life difficult for proxy providers. “Some hours ago (12~?) Your main website was down for like 6-7? Minutes… It will happen again, for hours, days…IF you don’t remove the encoded stuff from your website and let proxy operators, like myself, do their job,” an email to ExtraTorrent read.   Following that email, ExtraTorrent has reportedly been under a major DDoS attack for days, even overwhelming protections set up by CloudFlare, a company that provides DDoS protection. Currently, ExtraTorrent has limited availability from some geographic locations, but the site is still struggling to deal with the attack. The Pirate Bay is also offline, but the cause of the problem is unknown. A new hacking group is taking credit for a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that took down Tumblr this week. But so far, little is known about R.I.U. Star Patrol other than its motive of attacking for fun. Tumblr went down for more than two hours Wednesday afternoon and R.I.U. Star Patrol contacted Mashable to explain its reason for attacking: “There is no sinister motive,” the group told Mashable.”It’s all for light hearted fun.” The site was first reported offline shortly after 3:15pm ET. The service said on Twitter that some users were experiencing “latency”. Mashable reported that the site was back up for a few minutes around 3:52pm ET but went back down, returning at around 4:22pm ET. Full service was restored around 5:45pm ET. The Mirai connection Some in the security community believe the group carried out the attack using Mirai, malware tied to a record 620Gpbs attack on the website of noted journalist Brian Krebs and the coordinated assault against DNS hosting provider Dyn last fall. That DDoS crippled such major sites as Twitter, Paypal, Netflix and Reddit and shifted the world’s attention to threats against the so-called Internet of Things (IoT) – everyday devices and appliances connected to the web. What happened to Tumblr was a more typical DDoS, but it demonstrates how easy it has become to launch attacks since the source code for Mirai was openly published. In such attacks, a hacker attempts to overload or shut down a service so that legitimate users can no longer access it. Typical DoS attacks target web servers and aim to make websites unavailable. No data is stolen or compromised, but the interruption to the service can be costly for an organization. The most common type of DoS attack involves sending more traffic to a computer than it can handle. There are a variety of methods for DoS attacks, but the simplest and most common is to have a botnet flood a web server with requests. This is called a distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS). What we know about R.I.U. Star Patrol so far A scouring of the internet produced few details about this hacking group. From what we can tell, its Twitter account (@StarPatrolling) came online on December 13 and that its self-described leader goes by the Twitter handle @ ANTIPEACESP . Gaming news site 7421Max conducted an interview with @StarPatrolling and published it on Youtube. Those interviewed said they plan to launch coordinated attacks against Xbox on Christmas day. Asked about their motive, the hackers said, “We do it because we can.” They claim they are not motivated by money. “We have not been paid a single dollar for what we do,” one of the hackers said. On December 19, 7421Max reported that the group had taken down League of Legends and Warframe servers, and warned in a follow-up tweet that R.I.U. Star Patrol plans to knock down PSN and Xbox Live for Christmas 2016. Four evolved cyber-threats APAC organisations must pay attention to in 2017

US$81 million stolen from a Bangladesh bank. 500 million Yahoo! accounts swiped. A DDoS attack that brought down much of the internet. 2016’s cyber-attack headlines proved more than ever that companies have a visibility problem – they cannot see what is happening beneath the surface of their own networks. Based on Darktrace’s observations, the following predictions demonstrate the need for a new method of cyber defence – an immune system approach, to keep up with the fast-evolving threats that await us in 2017. 1. Attackers Will Not Just Steal Data – They Will  Change  It Today’s most savvy attackers are moving away from pure data theft or website hacking, to attacks that have a more subtle target – data integrity. We’ve seen ex-students successfully hack college computers to modify their grades. In 2013, Syrian hackers tapped into the Associated Press’ Twitter account and broadcasted fake reports that President Obama had been injured in explosions at the White House. Within minutes the news caused a 150-point drop in the Dow Jones. In 2017, attackers will use their ability to hack information systems not to just make a quick buck, but to cause long-term, reputational damage to individuals or groups, by eroding trust in data itself. The scenario is worrying for industries that rely heavily on public confidence. A laboratory that cannot vouch for the fidelity of medical test results, or a bank that has had account balances tampered with, are examples of organisations at risk. Governments may also fall foul of such attacks, as critical data repositories are altered, and public distrust in national institutions rises. These ‘trust attacks’ are also expected to disrupt the financial markets. An example of this is falsifying market information to cause ill-informed investments. We have already glimpsed the potential of disrupted M&A activity through cyber-attacks – is it a coincidence that the recent disclosure of the Yahoo hack happened while Verizon was in the process of acquiring the company? These attacks even have the power to sway public opinion. Hillary Clinton’s election campaign suffered a blow when thousands of emails from her campaign were leaked. An even graver risk would not be simply leaked emails but manipulation to create a false impression that a candidate has done something illegal or dishonourable. 2. More Attacks and Latent Threats Will Come from Insiders Insiders are often the source of the most dangerous attacks. They are harder to detect, because they use legitimate user credentials. They can do maximum damage, because they have knowledge of and privileged access to information required for their jobs, and can hop between network segments. A disgruntled employee looking to do damage stands a good chance through a cyber-attack. But insider threats are not just staff with chips on their shoulders. Non-malicious insiders are just as much of a vulnerability as deliberate saboteurs. How many times have links been clicked before checking email addresses? Or security policy contravened to get a job done quicker, such as uploading confidential documents on less secure public file hosting services? We can no longer reasonably expect 100 percent of employees and network users to be impervious to cyber-threats that are getting more advanced – they won’t make the right decision, every time. Organisations need to combat this insider threat by gaining visibility into their internal systems, rather than trying to reinforce their network perimeter. We don’t expect our skin to protect us from viruses – so we shouldn’t expect a firewall to stop advanced cyber-threats which, in many cases, originate from the inside in the first place. Just in the past year, immune system defence techniques have caught a plethora of insider threats, including an employee deliberately exfiltrating a customer database a week before handing in his notice; a game developer sending source code to his home email address so that he could work remotely over the weekend; a system administrator uploading network information to their home broadband router – the list goes on. Due to the increasing sophistication of external hackers, we are going to have a harder time distinguishing between insiders and external attackers who have hijacked legitimate user credentials. 3. The Internet of Things Will Become the Internet of Vulnerabilities According to IDC, 8.6 billion connected things will be in use across APAC in 2020, with more than half of major new business processes incorporating some element of IoT. These smart devices are woefully insecure in many cases – offering a golden opportunity for hackers. 2016 has seen some of the most innovative corporate hacks involving connected things. In the breach of DNS service Dyn in October, malware spread rapidly across an unprecedented number of devices including webcams and digital video recorders. In Singapore and Germany, we saw smaller but similar incidents with StarHub and Deutsche Telekom. Many of this year’s IoT hacks have gone unreported – they include printers, air conditioners and even a coffee machine. These attacks used IoT devices as stepping stones, from which to jump to more interesting areas of the network. However, sometimes the target is the device itself. One of the most shocking threats that we saw was when the fingerprint scanner that controlled the entrance to a major manufacturing plant was compromised – attackers were caught in the process of changing biometric data with their own fingerprints to gain physical access. In another attack, the videoconferencing unit at a sports company was hacked, and audio files were being transferred back to an unknown server in another continent. Artificial Intelligence Will Go Dark Artificial intelligence is exciting for many reasons – self-driving cars, virtual assistants, better weather forecasting etc. But artificial intelligence will also be used by attackers to wield highly sophisticated and persistent attacks that blend into the noise of busy networks. We have already seen the first glimpses of these types of attack. Polymorphic malware, which changes its attributes mid-attack to evade detection, has reinforced the obsoleteness of signature-based detection methods. What is emerging is a next generation of attacks that use AI-powered, customised code to emulate the behaviours of specific users so accurately as to fool even skilled security personnel. In 2017, we can expect AI to be applied to all stages of a cyber-attacker’s mission. This includes the ability to craft sophisticated and bespoke phishing campaigns that will successfully dupe even the most threat-conscious employee. Next year’s attacker can see more than your social media profile – they know that your 10am meeting with your supplier is being held at their new headquarters. At 9:15am, as you get off the train, an email with the subject line ‘Directions to Our Office’ arrives in your inbox, apparently from the person that you are meeting.
